Located in the heart of the charming village of Xhignesse, the Saint-Pierre church is listed as a major heritage site in Wallonia and is one of the finest examples of Romanesque architecture in the region.
Founded according to oral tradition around 687 on the initiative of the abbey of Stavelot-Malmedy, the former parish of Xhignesse occupies a site steeped in history.
The monks' choice of this location is probably explained by the presence of land formerly occupied by the Merovingians: in 1968, one of the most important Merovingian necropolises in Belgium was discovered on the hill known as "Tombeu" in Xhignesse.
The current church, built in the 12th century, captivates with the sobriety and power of its Romanesque architecture, characterized by its massive walls and full volumes. Inside, you can admire exceptional funerary slabs from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries,
including the epitaph of the parents of the famous Baroque sculptor Jean Del Cour.
Today, the Saint-Pierre church in Xhignesse is on the list of exceptional real estate heritage in the Walloon Region, benefiting from the ""Major Heritage of Wallonia"" label.
Good to know: the tour is accessible to strollers and dogs are allowed.
